From Granular to Liquid: Why Irish Farmers Are Making The Switch

Why More Irish Farmers Are Switching To Liquid Fertiliser

For County Down contractor Warren Carswell, the move to liquid fertiliser started as a practical decision. After more than 40 years working with granular fertiliser, he was looking for a more efficient way to work.

Three years later, Warren hasn’t looked back. He’s helped a growing number of livestock farmers make the switch to liquid fertiliser via his contract application service. Warren believes the results speak for themselves, commenting “once you use liquid, you don’t go back.”

The Benefits of Liquid Fertiliser for Irish Grassland Farmers

While operational efficiencies are important, Warren says the biggest difference farmers notice is in the field:

Leafier, Denser Grass Growth

One of the most consistent observations from farmers using liquid fertiliser is improved grass quality. Warren has seen swards become leafier, denser and more productive throughout the growing season, helping farmers maximise both silage and grazing performance. Resulting in more utilisable grass, stronger crops and improved feed value for livestock

Faster Regrowth After Cutting

Many of the farmers Warren works with when contract applying their liquid fertiliser have reported faster grass recovery following silage cuts, helping to maintain production throughout the season. Warren has observed strong aftergrass growth and believes the readily available nitrogen supplied through liquid fertiliser helps drive rapid crop recovery.

Liquid Fertiliser Delivering Strong Silage Performance

Silage quality and yield are critical for livestock farmers, and Warren has seen first-hand how liquid fertiliser can support both.

He commented that several customers have produced exceptionally heavy silage crops following liquid nitrogen applications, with dense, leafy growth contributing to both yield and feed quality.

Mr Carswell continued to highlight how liquid fertiliser was also simplifying operations. With no bags to handle or dispose of and faster application speeds, farmers and contractors can cover large areas quickly and efficiently.

For busy livestock farms, this flexibility can be particularly valuable during key growing periods when timing is critical

You get an even application on the whole field, right up to the edge. Farmers are guaranteed their units of nitrogen.

Why Irish Farmers Are Switching To Liquid Fertiliser

Why Farmers Who Switch To Liquid Rarely Go Back

According to Warren, the biggest challenge isn’t proving the benefits of liquid fertiliser it’s encouraging farmers to try it for the first time.

Once they see the results in their own fields, many become long-term users.

Neighbouring farmers notice stronger grass growth, improved silage crops and easier application, with word-of-mouth continuing to drive uptake across local farming communities.

Protecting Nitrogen Investments

Many of Warren’s customers choose to combine liquid fertiliser with NitroShield to help improve nitrogen use efficiency and reduce the risk of nitrogen losses in challenging conditions.

Having seen the difference first-hand, Warren says the product gives farmers reassurance that they are protecting the value of their fertiliser investment.

Considering Liquid Fertiliser for Your Farm?

Whether you’re looking to improve grass growth, simplify nitrogen applications or improve nitrogen use efficiency, liquid fertiliser is helping an increasing number of Irish farmers achieve more from their fertiliser programmes.

We work with a number of distributors across Ireland to provide local support and nationwide coverage. Warren works with us via Fane Valley.

As Warren’s experience shows, once farmers see the results for themselves, they’re often reluctant to return to traditional alternatives.
